How Assessment Work

Building regulations, introduced by the Australian Federal Government have set the minimum energy efficiency standards for new homes & alterations/ extensions.

An energy rating uses a scale from zero to 10 stars; with 6 stars considered to be the minimum standard. The need for heating and/or cooling to stay comfortable is reduced if a home is more energy efficient (i.e. achieves more stars in the energy assessment). The rating takes into account

  • The layout of the home
  • The construction of its roof, walls, windows and floors
  • The placement of windows and shading to the sun’s path and local breezes
  • The plan to insulate the building envelope
  • How well these suit the local climate.

For Flying Yellow to provide a tailored and accurate thermal assessment and specific model, the follow information is required

All drawings must be to scale and clearly dimensioned, showing:

Site plan, showing any adjacent structures

  • North point
  • Detailed floor plans for each level
  • Elevations: showing details of external walls
  • Sections: showing details of the internal, floor, walls and ceiling/ roof construction
  • Electrical plan
  • Window schedule, showing glazing and frame preferences
  • Construction material specifications

Walls

  • External wall construction (brick veneer/cavity brick/FC/single brick/weatherboard)
  • Internal wall construction (brick/metal framed/timber framed)
  • Wall insulation proposed (reflective foil/bulk insulation)

Windows

  • Glazing area: Height x width
  • Frame construction: Aluminium, timber, thermally broken
  • Window type (awning/casement/double hung/louvre/sliding)
  • Glazing Type (double/single/reflective/tinted)
  • External shading: Showing external blinds or awnings, privacy shutters

Roof

  • Roof construction: Tiled, metal, flat framed or concrete
  • Roof insulation if applicable
  • Ceiling insulation (bulk insulation)

Skylights

  • Location of Skylights
  • Details on if they are fixed, ventilated or tubular
  • Glazing type (single or double)

Ventilation

  • Location of chimneys, details on whether sealed or unsealed
  • Locations of any exhaust fans and nominate whether sealed or unsealed
  • Locations and volume of any down lights
  • Location of any ceiling fans

The
assessment

A PDF of the design is imported into the information system, with a 2-D model created from the import. Every touchpoint of the created model is ‘interpreted’ through a simulation to understand the buildings dependency upon mechanical heating and cooling. The model is augmented to achieve a 6 Star minimum standard result, with advice provided at a design-level on how to comply with the minimum standard.

The
Results

We will email you a detailed summary identifying the key data outputs during the assessment, providing you with the most economical and compliant solutions. If your design does not achieve the required rating in the preliminary assessment, the Flying Yellow service includes further recommendations and consultation.

Final
documentation

The final drawing set, with finalised details on the design and compliance-based thermal recommendations are bundled together and certified by one of our accredited assessors at Flying Yellow.

Further
Support

Flying Yellow has developed key relationships across the industry, including with local council, registered building surveyors and builders. Referrals and further communicative support engaging with industry stakeholders is part of the Flying Yellow service package.

Amendments
and changes

Amendments, due to changing design requirements or costings of to any previously finalised certified design can be achieved. The cost of the regenerating and repackaging models are individually priced dependent upon the complexity of the changes.
